AMY HAYSOM
Independent MLA Candidate for Saanich North and the Islands
As a long term member of the North Saanich and Gulf Islands community, on the unceded territories of Hul'qumi'num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples, including the Quw'utsun, TSAWOUT, and Penelakut Nations, Amy Haysom has a strong awareness of the issues that affect this region, and the various needs within the community. With recognition of the incredible landscape that includes the Saanich peninsula, and the southern Gulf Islands, Amy knows we have a unique demographic that requires a special political approach.
Amy has a degree in Sociology and International Relations, and worked for over 10 years in Global Affairs, specializing in International Children's Rights, advocating for youth voice in policy making, and indigenous rights. She worked with the Centre for Global Studies and sat on the UNESCO Sectoral Commission for Culture, Communication and Information where she developed strategies for local self awareness and sustainability through the arts and creative communications.
Amy has also worked in Education for over 15 years with teaching specialties in French, English and the Humanities. She has experience in both public and private education, and taught at the Vancouver Waldorf School in both Elementary and High School grade levels (all subjects), and at the Saltspring Centre School: Grade 2-4 B.C. curriculum, French and Music. Amy was the main camp facilitator in Spirit of Adventure Creative Arts camps for kids on Saltspring Island from 2020-2023.
Amy studies Yoga as a self development practice and has both managed and owned Yoga studios on Vancouver Island and in Sidney, BC. She has piloted a Yoga in the Classroom initiative on Saltspring, developing a model that is taught to ages from preschool to high school. Her programming includes working with indigenous collaborators, BIPOC awareness, and racial and gender equity so as to teach and practice wherever possible from a decolonialized approach.
Amy has lived on both the Saanich Peninsula, and on Saltspring Island for more than 20 years. She is a mother, has two dogs that keep her active!, and loves to adventure.
Amy knows well the charm, and challenge, of commuting within the riding to connect and engage with the full extent of our regional population, and she looks forward to actively engaging through integral connection with, and representation of, this vast and tremendous community.
